Anne Rice, author of famous horror books such as “Interview with the vampire” and “The Vampire Lestat”, has given up on Christianity and being a christian. This is a big surprise to many since Anne Rice has in her later years been known for her explicit religious beliefs. Rice has explained her sudden change of heart, stating on her Facebook account:
“I refuse to be anti-gay. I refuse to be anti-feminist. I refuse to be anti-artificial birth control. I refuse to be anti-Democrat. I refuse to be anti-secular humanism. I refuse to be anti-science. I refuse to be anti-life”.
Rice feels that she has been “an Outsider” in the christian community. She will remain committed to Christ, but finds it impossible to be a part of such a “hostile, disputatious and deservedly infamous group”.
My hat off to you, Ms. Rice, for making such a bold move while standing up for the oppressed! (gays, women etc.)
I unfortunately couldn’t copy for two Facebook statuses on this matter, so here’s a link to a page that was able to.

Update: Here are the two pertinent tweets from Anne Rice about this.
You go girl. Finally she has realized how things are with the fundementalists and intolerance in the US. And quiting “christianity because of her belief in the teachings of christ”. Funny that, but one Richard Dawkins could appreciate.
the Leaving of the christianity was summed up by her in an NPR (national public radio) interview as being a feeling of great relief so that— ” frankly after doing it, I felt sane for the first time in a very long while.”
Check out the Audio file of the interview here, with a printed transcript (you can even download the interview file for free, Yeah).

Thought you would be interested in a new interview (oct. 24th, 2010) with Anne Rice about this. Its and interview with the Guardian titled, in a no holds bar fashion, “Anne Rice: ‘I thought the church was flat-out immoral. I had to leave'”
Check it out here
